We are a newly (2003) established export facility located in Cebu Island, Philippines, certified according to the Standards of the Marine Aquarium Council (MAC). Our mission is to improve the quality in the marine ornamental trade. We try to achieve that through the following quality standards:
STRICTLY NO USE OF CYANIDE IN CATCHING FISH
Actually, we have been asked from clients around the world why we do not have certain species on the list everybody else in the Philippines has…the answer is as simple as that: we know how those species are caught and do not support use of cyanide.
We have only net caught fishes. No toxins or chemicals whatsoever are involved in the catching process or at any stage the animals are under our control.
FRESHLY CAUGHT ORGANISMS ACCORDING
TO EVERY SINGLE ORDER OF A CLIENT
Traditionally exporters send out stock lists after arrival of animals. A certain percentage is ordered and sent, but many remain in the tanks and new
batches arrive. If unlucky, it might take months before they shipped out…
The aquarium systems are far from the natural habitat conditions, food is
inadequate or not provided at all, stress levels are soaring because of high
stocking densities and deteriorating water quality.
Our approach is different: We do not keep stock because we believe that any prolonged periods in an exporter's system will affect the well being of animals. Our list shows organisms available in principle.
There are still uncertainties such as weather conditions and seasonality if the ordered organisms are available at that time in the preferred size and desired quantity. The sea is not a supermarket where all sizes and quantities are stocked in the shelves! Therefore the fill rate hardly reaches 100%. Please consider that fact and order some more. But the striking advantage is that we have the organisms caught freshly according to every single order of a client. Feed back from customers around the world indicate high satisfaction levels with our healthy animals.
Another issue is that some clients of smaller retail shops prefer the so called "raisin pickin". They order, for instance, single wrasses or invertebrates. Now imagine our collector receives an order with high diversity and low volume…the effort to complete the order is never converted into income. He will surely NOT look for a particular wrasse or a single sea urchin. Of course, if he comes across the ordered one (our fishermen know the species very well, most of them even with the scientific name!!) he will collect, however this chance is slim. The probability to receive the animals in a particular shipment increases exponentially when a higher number is ordered (e.g. discounted batch of 10) because the search for a collector becomes feasible considering effort, expenses (e.g. gasoline for the boat) and income.
DEAD ON ARRIVAL (DOA's) ALSO WITH MAC FISH?
Another important issue we would like to tackle: Of course, DOA's (Dead On Arrival) also occur in our shipments, even with MAC certified fish. Death is a fact of life and even under best natural conditions fish die because of biological and ecological causes. The reasons are that in each batch of fish there are less stress resistant individuals by genetic disposition, age, individual stage in the reproductive cycle, parasites or even diseases which do not show under low stress level environments such as our facility.
The fishes are not acquainted yet with artificial food and need time to adjust. According to clients importing our fish, the individuals recover fast from the shipping stress and display active and natural behavior within hours after acclimatization.
ALL ORGANISMS ARE KEPT NATURALLY
At no time we treat the animals with antibiotics, sedatives or any other chemicals. Of course, as commonly known, fish are the most heavily parasite infested vertebrate animals which does not exclude our fish. But we have evidence that healthy, strong fish are able to cope up with natural parasite infestation and therefore we like to keep it that way.
Should a parasite or disease show up we recommend isolating the fish and treating it according to the latest standard methods.
WE PREFER TO WORK WITH RESPONSIBLE IMPORTERS
Selling alive animals is not just a business. Those "Black Sheeps" who look at quick bucks should transfer to another trade because they won't last. We at the exporters side count on importers who:
know the biological and ecological requirements of the ordered organisms
are equipped with the aquarium systems providing habitats for the ordered organisms
know how to get them feeding and have the food available
have the competence and knowledge to inform potential customers about the organisms they are interested in
consider economic advantage (making sales) as second priority compared to the well being of organisms
provide "after sale" coaching if problems come up with the purchased organisms at the customers side
The supervisor staff of MarineFauna Inc. are marine biologists with
extensive knowledge of the biology, ecology as well as handling and transporting of organisms. We encourage
clients to contact us with special request for organisms (species, sizes, pairs etc.) for further arrangements.
We also specialize on invertebrates to complement your healthy reef tank system.
