Plankton concentrate

We offer Plankton concentrate (Code 890 and 891) in 180 ml and 1 liter volume for all plankton feeding animals in your reef tank. The Plankton has high nutritional value and when supplied regularly might trigger the reproductive cycle of ornamental fish and invertebrates. Particularly, filter feeders display full feeding behavior when the concentrate is added to your system. It is beautiful to see how corals open their polyps and try to catch the Plankton organisms.

A minimum order of 1 Box is required to maintain frozen status of the Plankton concentrate during the entire shipment duration.

How will I feed my animals in the tank with the Plankton concentrate?

After thawing, shake and apply in 10ml portions (= 50 m3 filtered sea water). Shut the filter down during feeding. Have a small pump running that the Plankton continues drifting as long as possible. Keep the bottle refrigerated and feed within 3 days. Frozen Plankton in the freezer is best before 3 months expired.

The following pictures illustrate the catching procedure.

A. Preparation for plankton catch on board of MarineFauna's RED BULL early in the morning at 5 am.

B. Our 1m wide and 6m long scientific Plankton net has a mesh size of 100 micrometer (= 1/10 mm). It is carefully released by hand to the sea avoiding sudden water pressure to the delicate net.

C. Samples are taken in 10 min intervals at cruising speeds of less than 2 knots. The entire catching procedure for 1 Box Plankton concentrate takes 3 hours.

D. After retrieving the net, the sample container is detached and the content poured into plastic bags. The bags are kept cool in a Styrofoam box. Of course, ZORRO has to approve first the fresh smell of the Plankton catch…

E. Close up of a Plankton sample. Naturally, the Plankton consists of major groups such as small crustaceans, planktonic eggs, larvae of all kind of marine animals (fish, anemones, corals, jellyfish, crabs, cephalopods, worms, shells, clams, starfish, cucumbers, sea urchins, brittle stars, ascidians etc.) foraminifers, radiolarians, algae and others with high nutritional value. All bottles are shipped frozen and supplied with labels.
